Welcome to Los Angeles

Local Information

Angelinos have always relied on wheels to get around, and now the size and shape of those wheels have taken on a new variety...

Upon your arrival know that the Los Angeles Airport is situated so that you can get to the fun quickly. It's close to the beaches and is only a 30-minute ride to Downtown. There's easy access to all seven regions via, buses, taxis and limos. But you may want to check out airport shuttles, which offer a nice balance between cost and convenience.

If you're flying into the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena airport, which is served by 6 major airlines, you might want to take Amtrak trains to your ultimate destination in Los Angeles, especially if you're headed downtown. Call 800.USA.RAIL

Ride the rails via trains, light rail, subways, or glide on the wheels of a growing network of buses, all of which can get you around without a car. And this is a reliable, inexpensive way to get to and from the airports. Check out schedules, routes and cost of all the Metro offerings. Call 800.COMMUTE (266.6883)
DASH - a fleet of shuttle buses provide inexpensive public transportation in several communities, including Downtown LA, Hollywood, the Westside, Venice and the Valleys. For more information call 213 or 310 or 818.808.2273.
For a real LA experience, you might choose to rent your wheels to fulfill a fantasy. How about an exotic sports car or a Harley Davidson?

Driving and Parking

  • If there are no signs posted, the maximum speed is 25 miles per hour on city streets and 65 miles per hour on the freeways.
  • You must wear a seat belt in a private vehicle.
  • You may turn right after stopping at a red light unless a sign says otherwise.
  • Pedestrians have the right-of-way.
  • Drunken driving laws are strictly enforced.
  • Open containers of alcoholic beverages are not permitted in vehicles.
  • Be sure to read carefully all signs that say what days or hours you may park. Illegally parked vehicles get tickets very quickly and may be towed away.
  • A red curb means no parking. A green curb means parking for a very limited time. A white curb is for loading and unloading passengers only.
  • Parking is generally available in lots or garages. Prices vary widely.
  • Many restaurants offer valet parking for a nominal fee.

Freeways

  • Freeways going east and west have even numbers, and north-south roads have odd numbers. Most freeways have a name, as well as a number. Ask for both when you're getting directions.
  • Call boxes with free phones are placed every half mile along the freeways for emergencies.
  • Listen to traffic reports before you start. Nearly all radio and TV stations have them during commuting hours. Radio stations with all-news or all-talk formats are good bets during the day. Visit the LADOT's website for real time traffic information.
  • If you need directions, call the Visitor Information Center Downtown 213/ 689-8822. If you are an AAA member, you can call auto club member services (800) 222-4357 and get specific directions, even on weekends.
