Spring, Arcadia and N. Alameda Sts. and Los Angeles has its origins in El Pueblo de Los Angeles, settled in 1781 by 11 Mexican families. Today, this 44-acre park protects the city's first church, firehouse and theater, as well as the 1818 Avila Adobe-the oldest existing house in the city-and other historic sites. In its center lies the old plaza, the symbolic heart of Los Angeles. World- famous Olvera Street is a block long Mexican style marketplace lined with street vendors, cafes, restaurants and gift shops selling handcrafted items such as pottery, tooled belts and leather huaraches.
