Brea Tar Pits

In 1906,
geologist discovered the pits had entrapped 200 varieties of mammals,
plants, birds, reptiles, and insects from the Pleistocene Era, and
preserved them as fossils. Excavations still take place usually from
July to mid-September when visitors may observe the process from the
Visitors Observation Station. Admission is free.
